wily,

Some very subtle FUD...

realworldtech.com

This is the first installment in a two-part article about Direct Rambus memory technology. It includes a detailed description of the unique characteristics of Rambus and how it differs from SDRAM.

The article purports to analyse the propagation delays in a Rambus system. However, the analysis is totally flawed because of the underlying assumptions which are used, such as the assertion that the input capacitances of the memory chips slow the signal down.

If the authors had wanted to be accurate they would have noted that the traces are narrowed in the vicinity of memory chip connections so as to compensate for this by reducing the trace capacitance by an amount equal to the device input capacitance. Having made this false assumption, they then compound it by calculating on the basis of a 50 ohm system rather than 28 ohms. The effect of this is to make the non-existent delays even bigger than they might otherwise have been.
