Re: SUNW lack of innovation

I included specifics in my post. You have nothing in your post but the assertion that I do not know anything which is false.

SUNW is primarily a proprietary box maker.
SUNW has not created any new ideas of any note outside of JAVA. It is primarily an engineering firm. Its R&D budget is D not R. Its spends a lot of money developing new chip sets for its servers and desktops. These are proprietary chipsets. They contract to have these chipsets fabricated with major semiconductor houses.

SUNW engineers the boxes well but their manufacturing is considered inefficient and their SG&A outlandish. Because their systems are proprietary they can charge a lot for them. When INTC gets its 64 bit chipset out SUNW will loose the ability to charge premium prices for its proprietary servers as the commoditization of the server business will commence. It will then be in trouble with earnings.

These machines run a version of UNIX (Solaris). They execute word processing programs, spreadsheets, and applications not unlike what MSFT sells. There are also specialty engineering applications that run on the machines but these can be ported to other architectures.

The windows user interface used is a knockoff of other company's interfaces. They buy their disk drives, Displays, power supplies, memory, and other components from the usual suspects. They are in fact a proprietary box maker!

Currently, SUNW is scrambling to reposition itself with acquisitions of other companies. These acquisitions are a necessary cost of doing business which should be factored into the valuation of the stock. When they are factored in the stock valuation is between $37 and $58 per share.

The Starportal project is following CORREL and MSFT into the rental of software over the net. It will be late into that market. They are hoping to leverage their server sales with this software.

I could go on but....
