Sunnyvale, California, Nov. 11 (Bloomberg) -- Advanced Micro Devices Inc., Intel Corp.'s biggest rival in the microprocessor market, will have revenue of $800 million in the fourth quarter, Chief Executive Jerry Sanders said.
Advanced Micro expects to ship at least 5 million microprocessors during the quarter because of strong demand for personal computers, Sanders said.
''Our business is terrific,'' he said at an analyst meeting at the company's Sunnyvale, California, headquarters.
Sanders said the company will ship 1 million of its new Athlon microprocessors this quarter. AMD is counting on Athlon to command higher prices than its K6 family of chips and help it return to profitability.
AMD is expected to have a fourth-quarter loss of 35 cents a share, the average estimate of analysts surveyed by First Call Corp. In the year-ago fourth quarter, net income was $22.3 million, or 15 cents a share, on revenue of $788.8 million.
The company's shares rose 1/8 to 23 1/8 in early afternoon trading before being halted on the New York Stock Exchange for an order imbalance.
