I think either RDRAM or DDR SDRAM will give a very nice competitive advantage to AMD. Right now, they have to move away from PC100, since that 200 MHz P2P bus is not being utilized to its fullest. I don't think it really matters whether Athlon is paired up with DDR before Pentium III is.

<What's your impression on chances of DDR becoming a viable alternative to DRD?>

I think DDR's acceptance into the market is pretty much a given now. Whether people will forsake RDRAM and go with DDR is another question. Though the anti-Rambus coalition would love to see that happen, I think instead a sort of VHS vs. Beta war will begin to develop, and the winners won't be resolved until the next generation of memory technologies (DDR-II vs. whatever Rambus is cooking up) is introduced.
