Operation Fresh Start ... One thought: Since you're completely renewing your system, you have an ideal no-cost opportunity to make changes in your disk partitioning. If you don't have Partition Magic, which works without losing data, you can use FDISK now, which will destroy your current data, but since you're about to destroy it anyway, there's no cost. If you're not about to do the big deed until the weekend, you have time to gather suggestions from other thread participants. Of special interest should be Rich's post about making a boot floppy.
