I don't understand this announcement. "Altace" is the brand name for the drug ramipril, manufactured by Hoechst Marion Roussel. It is an ACE inhibitor. This class of drug has been shown to be very effective in lowering blood pressure, protecting kidneys from diabetes, protecting the heart after a myocardial infarction, and prolonging life in patients with congestive heart failure. These benefits are thought to be class specific and not drug specific; in other words, all ACES are thought to have these benefits (there are about 10 of them). Does King manufacture generic drugs-- is ALTACE about to go off patent? That would be bigger news than another study confirming what physicians already know well.
