I am a small Abiomed investor who lives about 20 miles from their headquarters in northeastern Massachusetts. I am not an employee there and have no other connection.
How I found out about them is a long story, but I visited with their CFO this past spring based on the recommendation of a friend, and came away convinced that they were an excellent high risk investment.
My strong belief is that it would not be too difficult to lose everything I have invested, but more probable that they will return 10,000 percent in five years.
Whoever successfully develops a permanent and complete artificial heart replacement will make giant profits, as the demand is very large - and rightfully so - Abiomed has invested heavily in time and money for many years. I believe that Abiomed will be successful in their efforts - their successes of the past point in that direction.
The only real competition left is the Penn State Medical School. Strangely, both my wife and I have non-technical undergraduate degrees from Penn State, yet here we are, watching and hoping that Abiomed gets there first. Maybe both efforts will be successful.
My only other investment, which is much larger, is in Sun Microsystems, which has earned us five-fold in thirty months. I think Abiomed could do as well or better. Note that when we started buying SUNW in May, 1997, I believed it also would grow 10,000 per cent in five years. I still believe that.
I do manage our family investments, but I am not a professional financial advisor. These are my very personal beliefs and opinions. You are responsible for your own investment decisions. I wish you well.
Note: High demand and volume is driving the price of the stock very quickly these days. I don't know why, but I sure like it.
