THAT would have been an interesting story, not to mention all the "go-withs" from others who could recall certain parts of his life as well. Some really good interactive memories during those holiday occasions.

My mother's sister managed to get my great-grandfather to put down memories of his life before he passed away several years ago. I was able to get a copy of it, and it was several pages in length. Most of it though was pretty difficult to read as I suspect my aunt tried to take it from his own handwriting and type it onto something a little easier to understand. Still, it was a chore.

Some of the things I enjoyed most about reading the manuscript were the times from his youngest years. He told of how they would go onto the "Kaw" river (name has since changed, but don't remember its present name) and cut chunks of ice during winter to keep items cold. He mentioned living at one time very close to a place I currently reside, and how he would go hunting at a site which was the scene of a civil war battle. It couldn't have been too long after the war had ended because I know that no hunting is allowed in the park. He also spoke of how they would leave their sod dwelling during a tornado and seek shelter in a nearby ravine, or what it was like during one of those periods in our history when there was an outbreak of one kind of diesease or another. I'm thinking it may have been influenza, but it seems that would have been well after the period in which most of his memories relate.

It was very interesting reading. It is also something that stands a chance of being around when all the photos and other types of memorabilia have deteriorated to the point of being unrecognizable.
