The myth of Sysaphis (sorry for spelling) comes to mind, pushing that rock up the hill forever, only to see it come back down again. Sisyphus, indeed! Only this time the rock's rolled back so far, forward momentum may be impossible. If you've seen the movie, "War of the Roses," with Kathleen Turner and Michael Douglas, you'll know what happens when you're willing to cut off your nose to spite your face.
