I didn't think that the name change to Inprise was to fool people as you stated. The decline of Borland financially was the result of the illegal activities of MicroSoft, not an inferior product made by Borland. There was no reason to try and fool anyone about the Borland products or reputation. Microsoft played pure hell with Borland. The new name implied a renewed vigor.

I'm very aware of the tactics Microsoft used against Borland. Borland may not have been able to control what Microsoft did but the name change was something that was completely under their control and it didn't accomplish a single positive thing as far as I can tell.

How many other companies feel a need to change their corporate name to "imply a renewed vigor"? I don't think you could find more than a handful of people who truly believe that the name change was a good thing.

How many people do you think will be impressed by this new promotion campaign: Webvolutionaries?
