Jeff,
Well everyone else is expressing questions and opinions so here's mine...
Sources indicate that Chalem did not keep anything in his own name. A source even indicated that the estate in Colt's Neck was bought by Chalem, even though Ms. Scarola's father is the registered owner.
So, are we to assume that the only assets that Chalem had were his clothes, sparse furnishings and two dogs? Where's his money? Who has the key to his money? I don't think he lived hand-to-mouth, so someone, somewhere knows where Chalem has his money hidden. Someone must have access to it. My guess would be a lawyer somewhere, but the bigger question would be, "who did Chalem trust enough to be the guardian to possible untold millions in ill gotten gains?"... And who is capable of dipping into these funds now that Chalem is no longer around?
As I see it, Chalem was the "message" killing and Lehmann just happened to be in the wrong place at the wrong time. Chalem was the hear no evil, see no evil, speak no evil killing. Lehmann was just plain killed.
So that brings me to possible motives. I see primarily two possible motives here.
The first motive involves money. Either a revenge killing from someone that Chalem snookered in some shady deal somewhere, or someone who has the keys to whatever assets Chalem left behind.
The second possible motive would be to silence Chalem, or to permanently remove him from whatever he was currently into.
The so-called message theory would fit in better with the second motive rather than the first, but suppose it was just made to look like a message and instead, was just simply a killing over money? Very strange... Many possibilities...
