Intel sets up wireless Net tech center in Sweden

STOCKHOLM (CBS.MW) -- Intel Corp., the U.S.-based chipmaking giant, said Friday it's setting up a wireless Internet technology center in Stockholm, Sweden.
The Intel Wireless Competence Center will serve as a resource center for Intel and other industry giants to develop high-bandwidth, wireless Internet access technologies and products to businesses and consumers.
"Intel believes that wireless access will be a major Internet trend over the next several years," said Rob Eckelmann, vice-president and general manager of Intel Europe, Middle East and Africa.
Intel already has links with fellow industry giants. In 1998, Intel formed the Bluetooth initiative with Swedish telecoms equipment maker Ericsson AB (ERICY: news, msgs), its Finnish rival, Nokia Oyj AB (NOK: news, msgs) and U.S-based IBM Corp. (IBM: news, msgs) after launching the Mobile Data Initiative in 1996.
Shares in Intel (INTC: news, msgs) closed up 7/16 to 79 7/16 in New York on Thursday
