American Power Conversion Enhances Smart-UPS(R) 5000 Capabilities to Address Large Rack-based Power Requirements

WEST KINGSTON, R.I., Nov. 12 /PRNewswire/ -- American Power Conversion (Nasdaq: APCC) (APC) today announced the APC Step-Down Transformer, a rack- mount accessory that expands the 120-volt capacity of APC's Smart-UPS(R) 5000 rack-mount and tower units. The compact 2U (3.5 inch) Step-Down Transformer adds 12 additional 5-15R 120-volt receptacles and increases the total 120-volt VA capacity available from a Smart-UPS 5000 to 4500 VA. This is an ideal solution to address the increasing power density requirements of today's rack environments that are being populated with more thin servers and Internet appliances. Users can now have their entire rack configuration protected and managed from a single UPS and Step-Down Transformer. The APC Step-Down Transformer, which conveniently plugs directly into the Smart-UPS 5000 series, is the power protection industry's only 5 kVA rack-mount 120-volt high output solution which also provides output isolation. Additionally, the Step-Down Transformer can be used in combination with APC's Symmetra(TM) Power Array(TM) line of high availability power protection solutions to simplify distribution of 120V power within the rack.

"APC is continually striving to offer our customers the most flexible options possible to ensure systems availability," said Ed Bednarcik, general manager of APC's Business Networks Group. "By offering the ability to utilize 120-volt output from the Smart-UPS 5000 series, this reliable power protection solution can now be extended to more rack-based, mission-critical components configured with 120V power cord sets."

The APC Smart-UPS 5000 rack-mount and tower solutions are among the smallest 5000VA units in the UPS industry, consuming only five U of rack space (22.25cm/8.75 inches) and a footprint of 19.6 x 43.2 cm/8.7 x 17 inches, respectively. The cost-effective Smart-UPS 5000 addresses the demand for high power servers as well as the need to centralize all servers and related equipment, such as a server farm or a small data center.

In addition to shipping with APC's award-winning PowerChute(R) plus power management software, the APC Smart-UPS 5000 is at the forefront of the industry by offering two management-customization slots, providing increased UPS management flexibility, without compromising valuable space. By utilizing APC's extensive selection of accessories, which include environmental, Web- based, and out-of-band management capabilities, network managers can simply monitor, manage, and protect servers and related network equipment. APC's Step-Down Transformer will be available in North America in December. The product has an estimated resale price of $689.
