Something I have always done that works pretty well for cleaning the "gunk" off of battery terminals, is to poor Coke or some other soda on it. It dissolves it and makes it very easy to just wash off. I am sure there is some kind of fancy chemical reaction with the Coke, but I just like that it works.

PS - do this somewhere other than your own driveway because once you have washed it off, it will stain the concrete.
