There have been a lot of defections from Scotty's ranch over the years. Quite a few of them went to Bill Gates spread up north.
If that is true, it is because M$ will pay more for the talent to keep up some of their their internal Solaris/Sun enterprise environment. No UNIX talent to pull from within with that group. What talent does Sun need that M$ has? How to write bloated, buggy soft(vapor)ware?
I worked for Sun some time ago, and I can tell you they pull talented people from everywhere. HR says they get up to 10,000 resumes/month. I was very impressed with the education level and experience of many of the employees.
However, I left because I felt Sun did not offer enough of a chance to participate in the growth of the company. An ESPP plan and sparse ESOP plan (that only a handful of us were lucky enough to participate in) were not enough to keep me around.
You can't even buy the stock in the 401K - a major bummer. There would be 100's of millionaires walking around SUN if that had been available. And it costs the Company nothing!
As for Culture Shock, I've never seen a better company culture anywhere than Sun, and that, I miss.
I have also had first hand experience with M$ "culture", and I have found it to be abrasive, domineering and combative. Basically, a**holeish. And this was before I had any negative opinion on the matter.
Of course, that was a few years of my experience, but IMO, more accurate than your speculation.
