There are many reasons for ALA to talk to NN. From their website: alcatel.com The 3606 Mainstreet is equipped with a single X.21 or V.35 aggregate interface. The aggregate interface is formatted using Newbridge HCM high-capacity subrate multiplexing. Voice, fax and data can be carried on the aggregate with bandwidth utilization efficiency approaching 98%.
