Here is a weekend report on disk drive pricing from a sample of retail distributor drives.

Disk drive pricing remained stable last week. The weighted average desktop drive dropped 0.2% last week. The average price of drives less than 11 gb dropped 0.1%. The average price of drives between 11 and 21 gb dropped 0.3%. The average price of drives over 21 gb dropped 0.4%. The average SCSI drive (enterprise) dropped 0.8%.

The weighted average desktop drive dropped 1.0% for the last month. The average price of drives less than 11 gb rose 0.0%. The average price of drives between 11 and 21 gb dropped 0.9%. The average price of drives over 21 gb dropped 2.0%. The average SCSI drive dropped 3.2%.

The weighted average desktop drive dropped at the monthly rate of 1.1% since the beginning of this quarter.

The Maxtor price increases did not appear at the local distributors sampled. Actually Maxtor had the largest price decreases of any manufacturer over the last week. The 34 drives sampled had an average price decrease of 0.54%. Maxtor's price decreases finished second to Fujitsu with a 1.4% decrease over the past month.
