>>Columnist Mark Madden: Paterno to blame for Minnesota loss

Saturday, November 13, 1999

By Mark Madden

There were plenty of reasons why Penn State lost to Minnesota, bad luck
perhaps being first and foremost. But Joe Paterno's inexplicable use of
senior tailback Cordell Mitchell in place of sophomore Eric McCoo during
the second half was right up there, too.

McCoo was averaging more than 7 yards per carry. When you gain that kind
of real estate, you produce points and kill clocks. But, JoePa had to
play the senior. I've said all year that Paterno is too soft to win a
national championship, and he proved me right. All it took to blow it
was one bad decision based on sentimentality instead of logic, and
Paterno made it.<<
