Oracle to Back IBM-Led Unix Standardization Effort
SOMERS, N.Y. (Reuters) - International Business Machines Corp (NYSE:IBM - news). and Oracle Corp (Nasdaq:ORCL - news)., usually fierce rivals, on Friday said they would collaborate on an IBM- led effort to standardize the Unix operating system.

The two companies said they would work together to unify IBM's version of the Unix operating system with Monterey/64, a project backed by IBM, Unix software maker Santa Cruz Operation Inc (Nasdaq:SCOC - news). and chipmaker Intel Corp (Nasdaq:INTC - news). to make a mass-market version of Unix.

Unix, a software operating system commonly used to run powerful business computers, competes with Microsoft Corp (Nasdaq:MSFT - news).'s Windows operating system.
