Hello David, thanks for reminding me once again that the participants on this board tend to come from a broad range of backgrounds, primarily from the general investment community. Sometimes we propeller heads tend to get carried away with ourselves and get sloppy by forgetting our etiquette. smile

The short answer to your question, techweb.com

The longer answer:

Jay's recommendation, which was renamed acronymfinder.com , is an excellent site for a broad range of meanings that might be associated with acronyms and abbreviations. I too became aware it yesterday when he posted it on the last mile thread.

If you are looking for more than a translation, perhaps with some background information, there are many other good sites as well.

The one below is one that I use from time to time, and even contribute to at times (a nice feature which allows the publisher to stay abreast of emerging terms and definitions which is incorporated in the page).

If the term in question is clearly one that belongs to the universe of telecommunications, datacomm or any area of data processing --and in this case it could be an abbreviation, acronym or even a whole word or group of words-- then you might want to include this Techweb site from CMP Publications in your bookmark collection, as well:

techweb.com

Here's an example of their value. I used your example of SAN which returns not only a definition but a brief tutorial, with diagrams to boot:

techweb.com

Note that they not only treat the term which you entered, but they even contrast it to other concepts and terms (NAS in this case, or network attached storage... which is perhaps the term I could have used in my original post, instead), as well. At the very end of each reply they also offer a list of related or close meanings and an interesting random term option. Enjoy its use.

Regards, Frank Coluccio
