>> Not so rosy (but still beats DSL on price/performance

Following from 768K DSL Line ... Seattle, GTE, local ISP.

Roadrunner Bandwidth Results
Loaded 1858812 bytes in 47.34 seconds.
Your throughput is:
314 Kb/s (kiloBITS per second)
39 KB/s (kiloBYTES per second)

That 39 Kbytes/sec is pretty good considering the route.

You've given us a good example of the fact that when one gets above around 512 Kbytes/sec in the "last mile", then you speed to average places on the web has pretty much topped out.

And also that your speed to places more "local" to you ... in your case the www.satx.rr.com server ... can be much higher if your last mile is faster.

Cable often does have a major advantage over DSL when accessing sites within the cable provider's sub-cloud. Outside the sub-cloud, the speed advantage becomes less relevant.

DSL has the advantage of being more symmetric. In my case, I have 768K in both directions and run a VPN (PPTP, L2TP) connection from home to office so I can cross-mount drives.

Anyone here have experience running VPN connections over cable?
