Former Minister's conviction makes legal history in Kerala

Thiruvananthapuram, November 13 (T. N. Nair)

For The first time in the political history of Kerala, nemesis has caught up at last with one who misused his ministerial position to favour a partyman in the construction of a project which drained the exchequer of crores. The politician, convicted of the corruption charge in the award of the contract for the Edamalayar hydro-electric power project and sentenced to five-years rigorous imprisonment with a fine of Rs 10,000 is former Power Minister and Kerala Congress (B) leader R. Balakrishna Pillai.

Recouping in the ICU of the Medical Trust Hospital in Kochi, Pillai can use the six-month bail granted by the Kerala High Court yesterday to prolong the case beyond the decade it has lasted. But the chances of a reprieve for him and the two others sentenced to the same jail term - former KSEB Chairman K. Ramachandran Nair and former member of KSEB consultative committee P. K. Sajeev, who was the de facto contractor- are not rated high.......(continued)
