-------------------------------------------------------------------------------- Flextronics to ManufacturemPhase TRAVERSER, First Telecommunications Solution Allowing Telcos toImmediately and Cost Effectively Compete With Cable Companies November 4, 1999 09:38 AM NORWALK, Conn.--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 4, 1999--mPhase Technologies Inc. XDSL , the leading designer of broadcast digital television and high speed data solutions for the telecommunications industry, and Flextronics International Ltd. FLEX , a full-service supplier of innovative design, engineering and electronics manufacturing solutions, today announced they have signed a product development contract. Flextronics will prototype and pilot run the Intelligent Network Interface (INI) (a next generation set top box), and central office equipment for mPhase's TRAVERSER(tm) Digital Video and Data Delivery System (DVDDS), which enables telecommunications companies to simultaneously broadcast digital television, high-speed Internet access and traditional telephone service over existing copper telephone wires.
"As customers demand higher quality television programming, along with faster and more reliable Internet services, the introduction of the TRAVERSER will open up new ways for telcos to compete in the market for broadband access services," said Sue Cifelli, executive vice president of marketing & sales for mPhase. "We selected Flextronics to manufacture the TRAVERSER because of its ability to quicken mPhase's entrance into this evolving market and because of its proven track record as the leading worldwide electronics manufacturing services provider."
Flextronics, the world's fourth largest contract manufacturer, is producing the TRAVERSER INI and the central office equipment in its Westford, Massachusetts Product Introduction Center. Flextronics and mPhase intend to begin full production in April 2000. Before the April launch, Flextronics will design, prototype and test the TRAVERSER. Their Industrial Park model reduces logistical barriers to manufacturing and provides mPhase with a central manufacturing resource.
mPhase's TRAVERSER will enable telephone companies to compete with broadband carriers in the emerging high-speed Internet access market by providing an all-in-one communications solution. The TRAVERSER uses Rate Adaptive Digital Subscriber Line (RADSL) technology to enable telephone companies to simultaneously transmit high-speed Internet access, up to 400 channels of digital television programming and traditional voice services. This approach maximizes telcos' substantial investments in existing copper telephone wires. The TRAVERSER also opens new revenue streams for telcos by enabling them to provide new types of enhanced services like digital ad insertion, e-commerce and Internet advertising.
"Flextronics prides itself on bringing new, cutting-edge products to market," said Nicholas Brathwaite, vice president of Advanced Technologies and Engineering Services for Flextronics International. "The TRAVERSER represents a change in the high-speed Internet access market that will enable telcos to compete with broadband carriers by using their existing infrastructures. We will allot the necessary resources as a one-stop, full-service manufacturer to quickly deliver this product into the service provider market."
Trials of mPhase's TRAVERSER are currently underway in Hartwell, Georgia, Ulysses, Kansas and Atlanta, Georgia. The TRAVERSER will be available nationwide to telcos for purchase in April of 2000.
