Business: Dalmia Cements is trying to shake off its conservative image.

If there was one company that felt the pangs of Partition, it was the 60-year-old Dalmia Cements. It's founder J. Dayal Dalmia, a Gandhian and one of the unsung heroes of corporate India, had put up three cement plants in 1939. Two of his plants were in Pakistan while the other was in Tiruchi. The Dalmias lost their plants in Pakistan after Partition and had to settle for a meagre compensation.

But they never lost heart. Dalmia Cements (Bharat) consolidated its business by strengthening its Dalmiapuram plant near Tiruchi. Today 70 per cent of the turnover of the Rs 350-crore Y.H. Dalmia group comes from its flagship company, Dalmia Cements.....
