Hello Jim, re: <<it is AB's legitimate and unbiased predictive analysis on possible industry trends

I'd have to disagree, as I dont believe it's either legitimate or unbiased, but perhaps we means different things by those terms. By this I mean there is no basis for a legitimate technical performance comparison since VOFDM is not "done." All their defensive claims using the terms "ideal solution" and "most efficient" relative to their product are without basis.

As far as not being unbiased, I just mean that no company produces unbiased marketing and/or product literature. Unbiasedness is too non-committal to foster sales. Far-fetched or slightly twisted and massaged claims are what sell products. Take their pressing the single ASIC vs multiple ASIC point. BRCM has in fact announced their intentions on a single chip, integrated VOFDM PHY/MAC, and they are certainly capable of delivering it.

I think the whitepaper is just a way to provide potential customers their marketing view of VOFDM, since there have almost certainly been inquiries by potential customers regarding why they're better than VOFDM. I don't think there's any more to it than that, but I'm sure there's some element of spite as they are competitors after all.

Finally, as for the statements regarding the DOCSIS 1.1 MAC being non-optimal for wireless.....well, sure, but define optimal. It's situation-dependent. Besides, most optimal from an engineers perspective has little correlation with a successful product in the marketplace.

There is no implication by the VOFDM crowd the DOCSIS 1.1 MAC will be a drop-in, bolt-on solution as it now stands. There will be some changes and they've acknowledged this. The AB guy(s) that wrote this haven't read the DOCSIS 1.1 specs very carefully, and almost certainly had never looked at them prior to the announcement, as this is outside their area. I know several AB guys so I'll leave it at that.

Also I don't believe AB would be excluded if they were to inquire. It just wouldn't make sense for them to even inquire.

Still, what REALLY matters--in the US anyway--is what Sprint/WCOM/@home et.al., think after trials. Whitepapers will have no impact on this.
