I agree, Doctors are not savants any more than the rest of us.
I have a liver condition known as PSC (that one that just killed Payton), and when I was diagnosed in 92, I got two big pieces of information. One was that I wasn't likely to live for more than 5 years without a liver transplant. And two was that the only way that I could even make that 5 years is if I lived on a low fat, high fiber diet.
Well, I was 18 at the time, and worked at a steakhouse prior to entering the hospital. So when they let me out 6 months later, I went right back to my wicked ways. I figured, if I only had five years, I might as well enjoy them, and granola bars with soy milk doesn't cut it in my book.
I still have the same diet. I eat about half a kilo of either pork or beef every day, with at least one beer. The best part is that my Doctor has given me an almost clean bill of health. Except for my colitis, there are no signs that I have PSC, even my biopsies show that the fibrosis in my liver is decreasing - which doesn't happen, by the way.
I've learned to only barely listen to what my doctor says, and instead to listen to that little internal voice when it comes to my health. Your body knows what you need a hell of a lot better than some whitecoat. I only let the doctors have their way when I'm hospitilized. Otherwise, its my damn life. |
