Pace Extends Digital Cable Contract With Cable & Wireless Communications
Jump to first matched term
WEST YORKSHIRE, England--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 11, 1999--Cable & Wireless Communications has extended its contract with Pace Micro Technology for digital cable set-top boxes, bringing its total order to 300,000 units. The set-top boxes will be used in the continued rollout of Cable & Wireless Communications' digital services that were launched earlier this year.

The set-top box developed and supplied to Cable & Wireless Communications is the world's first digital set-top box to incorporate a Docsis-compliant cable modem. This modem, developed by Cisco Systems, enables operators such as Cable & Wireless Communications to deliver a new generation of interactive set-top boxes offering a wide range of services such as: e-mail; e-commerce and home shopping; gaming and internet access.

Cable & Wireless Communications have already launched a range of features - including e-mail via the TV and an initial selection of Internet-based interactive sites. By the end of October, up to 100 interactive sites will have been launched, with other services such as interactive games following closely behind. In addition, customers can connect their set top box to a PC, using the cable modem to access high speed Internet services.

"The launch of Cable & Wireless Communications' digital cable services was a important moment, not just for the UK cable industry, but for the international marketplace," said Pace's marketing director Andrew Wallace. "We have seen since the Cable & Wireless launch, how cable television has significant potential to drive the future of digital television and home entertainment. The set-top box is the gateway to this future, which we are discussing with operators worldwide."

Noel Leslie, Director of Digital Television at Cable & Wireless Communications, says: "The extended order with Pace reflects our initial success in attracting customers to our digital platform. The combination of a set top box and cable modem within universal architecture is unique to Cable & Wireless Communications. In partnership with Pace we are delivering the world's first digital cable system bringing together digital television and interactive services. Using Euro-DOCSIS means we can bring a strong testing pedigree and wide manufacturer's endorsement as the basis of our digital proposition to customers."
