Zoltan, thanx for link to LA Times (slowest loading paper on the net, IMO).Gore's service in-country could be a legitimate positive if he could stop, for one second, being such a dork when talking about it.

My thoughts on the Times piece --

Quite the divide between beaters of the bad bush and REMFs like Gore. No shame in being a REMF; the shame is in pretending otherwise. Not really necessary, IMO.

More than a few in positions like Gore's came home in a bag. He has every right to claim he was in harm's way by choice. You didn't have to be in a firefight to get wasted. Even joy-riding on a slick was not without a certain pucker factor. The thought of Al on the pointy end of the stick, however, is a bit much.

The comments about soldiers being ordered to protect Gore are ridiculous and a cheap shot. No doubt someone said to someone, probably more than once, "Hey, don't let Asshole step on a mine or twist his ankle or anything. His old man's a senator. If the kid gets scratched, he'll probably have us all sent to 'Nam! Hahahahah." In any case, incoming has no idea of the bodyguard concept.

My main problem with the Al Goes To War story is that he didn't do the year. Clearly dropped by to get his ticket punched.
