I think that Jude the Obscure may have most fully reflected Hardy's belief that man is subject to forces that he can neither understand or control. The problem is, as you point out, that one can see Hardy pulling the strings. Moreover, Jude is such a perfect ass so much of the time and such a bore! One of the more unusual college assignments I had in a lit class was to select a book and keep a diary as I read it. Because I had previously enjoyed the harsh power of Hardy's works, I picked this book. The diary briskly degenerated into entries such as "I hate this damned book and can hardly wait to finish it! Jude, you jerk, wake up!"
