I'll make a deal with you. You help me understand Sun the way you do and I'll send you over to Stew so he can help you understand Gemstar the way he does. :)

My thinking is that Gemstar has definitely crossed the chasm, probably will not go through a bowling alley (which is something I've learned about consumer products from reading Tornado), and will enter the tornado soon. Defining moments are the announced acquisition of TV Guide, future announcements we can only speculate about, and the Fed's requirements that consumers be able to buy or rent a set-top box of their choice in July.

I'm not much of a visionary, so don't ask me about anything further out than July. :)

Seriously, hope this helps. If you're thinking that the definitions of chasms, bowling alleys, and tornados are nebulous, and that being certain of when a company has enterred each of those phases is nebulous, I couldn't agree with you more. That's another way of saying I could be very wrong.
