Interesting article from Japanese business wire:

Tokyo, April 10 Kyodo
......excerpted)

"Prices [silver] stayed at the 200 yen level for some time thereafter but dropped to the 190 yen level at the start of the month.

Market participants attribute the decline to a recent increase in the use of the advanced photo system (APS), an industry-wide line of new technologically advanced cameras that use 24-millimeter film rather than the conventional 33-mm [35?]film.

As photograph-related use accounts for half of silver consumption in the world, the growth of APS is expected to substantially reduce demand for the metal, they said.

Digital cameras as well do not need silver as they use semiconductor-based memory devices in place of film."

A perspective I wasn't pleased to read, having purchased some SSRIF in the past few months.

I also read (somewhere) recently that the CPM Group's Silver Survey for 1997 stated that the shortfall of silver would be substantially less in 1997 because of increasing mine production into 1998.

So, their are two discouraging articles for silver investors.

Regardless of the above, if the US dollar takes a dive I think all precious metals will move up rapidly - this leaves one strangely waiting for the next large disaster - economic or otherwise.
