dave, wap is based on the concept of being in the 'middle'
a translator if you will, similar to Crossroads in ERP market

it adds a layer of complexity impacting;
programming knowledge and use of tools
increasing time for information flow and acknowledgements from users
additional 'cost' paid to purveyor of tools or service provider

the assumption is that this 'translator' will facilitate conversion from the current pipe/standard (PC with browser GUI) to wireless GUI

it appears to me that each assumption working backwards from the wireless gui through to the wap server and to the information provider is flawed

my observation is that current development tools, Java from SUN and IBM and Oracles toolsets will be extended streamling the process

with respect to future trends, it is my belief that voice will be integrated with wireless gui (custom built with tools above) utilizing some sort of IVR standard, possibly influenced by VoXML

MSFT is also working very hard in both of those areas and i have neglected to mention a 'vector' of inluence, voice recognition, which will compliment the voice/gui integration further rendering the current wap standard redundant

of course wap could mutate, though i believe that this might benefit the industry, the tool makers will benefit directly
HDML (phcm) will be a loser, JAVA a winner
cost and availability of labour the motivator

i can't say any more right now, but will provide references when possible

this is imho,
regards,
ynot :)
