diana g, To Strictly Drilling and This Old House Thread,

I understand what you are saying about snow on the roofs acting as an insulator. I live in PA and we have had some cold winters, especially upstate. I also understand that it often "warms up to snow". However, with heavy insulation I notice very little of this snow on roof effect. The difference is mostly obvious on older construction as opposed to heavily insulated new or remodeled. In our area there is so much new construction that it will soon outweigh the old.
Besides, in a La Nina year there are frequent thaws (*and ice storms forecast for the Mid Atlantic/Northeast) to get that snow off the roof before the next cold blast.

Countering the insulation effect, whether it be via snow, fiberglass etc. is the wealth effect. Folks just don't turn back their thermostats anymore, not like when they were watching Jimmy Carter in a sweater trying to give a fireside chat about malaise and turning back the heat. Too much money in the 401K and the fuel bills last two years were inexpensive, the 70's not even a memory for many and just a fading one for the rest of us.

I say God Bless'em all, those cozy yuppies, oil just went over $25 on mrci.
