I'm making my first submission earlier than I thought I would. As someone who is only up to page 48 in the RFM, I really know only enough to be dangerous, but I'm going to take a risk and do this anyway. I've read that Internet access for Email is currently inside the tornado, and I've read about hypergrowth and about de facto standards coming out of a tornado.

Then this weekend I spent a little time looking at Software.com ( SWCM ) as my MoMo side was researching wireless technology and some other things going into Comdex. So anyway, my budding GG persona starts thinking ...

SWCM looks like the market leader in large-scale messaging products. They provide packages that allow ISPs to outsource the email service. As of 9/30/99 they have over 56,000,000 mailboxes serviced, which is about a 50% increase in about 6 months.

Customers at that time included ... Excite@Home, Ameritech Interactive Media Services, AT&T Canada, AT&T WorldNet© Service, Bell Atlantic Internet Service, GTE Internetworking Services, Hong Kong Telecom, Pacific Internet, PSINet, Sprint PCS, Road Runner, Telecom Italia Net, Telekom Malaysia, Telecom New Zealand, Tele Danmark, onebox.com & dotsafe. Since then, they've added Netpliance and Sonera as customers.

They have announced partnerships with CSCO (to develop unified communications for wireless) & IBM (to include software pre-loaded on IBM servers).

So I'm wondering, do we have a de facto standard being adopted for large scale email system management? Who are the competitors? I know there are other outsourcing companies, notably CPTH, but I don't think they scale anywhere near as well.

In addition to benefiting from the Internet Email Tornado, SWCM is I think, in position to benefit greatly from any Wireless Email or Email Appliance tornados that might be coming.

Is SWCM a potential Gorilla?

Respectfully and humbly;
TheDadGuy
