When I got to college, I had a very tough piano teacher. I had always been made much of in my small town for my ability, which was probably not as great as they, and consequently I, thought. I skimmed along on flair and emotion, faking out most of my teachers for 12 years. This guy was a pounder and yeller. And he hurt my delicate feelings. He said, "Talent is nothing. Work is everything. So big deal- you have a gift. A lot of people have the gifts- but at this level, you either sweat or you quit. But don't waste my time."
So I quit.
Which does not make me proud.
