Yes, that seems to be the case. Therefore, how shall we evaluate the importance of poetry? Does it inspire, instruct, or edify in sufficient degree that it can be said to have indirect social effects through its effects on the educated? Or is it a precious, but fragile, commodity, fit for the delectation of delicate palates, but without greater significance?
