IMF Warns Against US Rate Increase Before Year 2000, AFX Says

Singapore, Nov. 14 (Bloomberg) -- The International Monetary Fund said a big rise in U.S. interest rates may hurt financial markets already grappling with the Year 2000 computer glitch, reported AFX-Asia, citing IMF official Flemming Larsen. The Federal Reserve will probably boost rates in 2000 if the American economy doesn't slow, to head off inflation, Larsen said. Asia could benefit from a U.S. slowdown, attracting money that might otherwise go to American businesses, Larsen said, according to AFX.

Fed policy-makers meet Tuesday to decide whether to raise interest rates. They have already boosted their target for federal funds -- the rate that banks charge each other for overnight loans - in two 25-basis-point steps this year. The Fed's current target for federal funds is 5.25 percent.
