Comdex Part 1:

One word...INSANITY!!!

I had heard all of the horror stories of Comdex crowds, but I was not prepared for the shear number of people attending Mr. Bill's introductory keynote. I now know what a cow feels like on a cattle drive. Good thing there wasn't a fire.

Even though I arrived at the Venetian an hour early, I was steered into a queue for overflow into one of many simulcast conference rooms. Bill opened his address with, "anyone know any good lawyer jokes." Then, after a little mumbo-jumbo they showed a couped of skits that they had prepared. The funniest one was an Austin Powers parody. It started out overlooking a big conference table with the back of a high back leather executive chair at the end. The chair spun around and it was Steve Ballmer playing Dr. Evil. He talked about how he was going to bring the world to its knees by destroying the internet. Then came Bill Gates to the rescue dressed as Austin Powers. He exclaimed, "I put the sin in syntax, baby... Oh behave."

After the levity, there were Windows 2000 demonstrations stressing nonstop server capabilities, web development, and web access from portable devices through to a home's central PC server. XML was stressed as enabling the next phase of the internet.

Tonight the 80 billion dollar man -- tomorrow morning the 50 million dollar woman: Carly Fiona of HP.

To be continued...

Pravin.
