Thanks for your response, Adam. I didn't mean to imply that the Transmeta processor was a new discovery. (Even I have known about that for over a year.) With deep pockets like Paul Allen on board, I was wondering (worrying?) if Transmeta can rapidly get up to speed and seriously compete with AMD and INTC, particularly at this juncture in AMD's fragile but positive outlook. I am Long AMD and I thought I would query the cognoscenti on this board since my technical expertise is not a match for many of you.

In particular I was wondering about the ramp rate of a potential Transmeta processor. Assuming Torvald had some big announcement at Comdex, wouldn't Transmeta be many months (years?) away from market if they only have a design but no fab built or rented? And if they had a fab lined up, wouldn't the world of savvy investors already be aware of such a hard to hide secret?

Also with Torvald's expertise isn't there a suspicion that this new processor would be optimized for a new operating system? If so, why would Allen invest to directly compete with his sizable holding in Microsoft and the Windows OS?

So, does the board view Transmeta as an also-ran-long-shot, a too-early-to-tell development, or a potential serious threat to AMD's and INTC's future?
