CS news Leading Japanese Educational Organization Selects Cabletron Convergence Solution Cabletron Chosen to Enable Deployment of Multimedia Education ROCHESTER, N.H. and HAMAMATSU, Japan--(BUSINESS WIRE)--Nov. 15, 1999--Cabletron Systems (NYSE:CS - news) today announced that the Seirei Gakuen Educational Organization (SGEO), Japan's leading healthcare education center located in Hamamatsu City, has selected a Cabletron convergence solution to enable deployment of multimedia education. SGEO is Japan's national center for teaching and training the bulk of the country's healthcare workers, including nurses, midwifes and care workers.
SGEO's primary goal in implementing a new convergence strategy for multimedia was to enable its students to improve the efficiency and effectiveness of their studies. This included the ability to prepare for upcoming classes by remotely reviewing lecture notes and materials. In addition, the new infrastructure had to enable individual PC access to both the Internet and the campus-wide LAN, irrespective of location.
A key element to the new communications infrastructure was the ability to ensure minimal congestion during periods of concentrated user access. By harnessing the power of Cabletron's high-performance, Layer 4 SmartSwitch Router (SSR) 8000, SGCO created a network that could apply guaranteed, end-to-end Quality of Service (QoS) to multimedia content, as well as:
wire-speed Gigabit routing to support high-bandwidth applications; bandwidth monitoring capabilities to understand application growth and plan future bandwidth requirements; policy and accounting functionality to allocate costs to departments and bill students where appropriate and; enhanced security features to ensure approved student access to course work and material. ``Our goal was to create a network that would be capable of meeting our needs throughout the next decade,' explained SGEO Administrative Director Ruka Horiguchi. ``We were specifically seeking to create an environment that would be able to support multimedia education. The environment would also have to support the rapid evolving information needs of our students, each of whom we expect to have their own personal computer within the next two to three years.'
At this stage, Cabletron's convergence solution for SGEO incorporates only the university, junior college and administrative offices. However, SGEO intends to expand the system to also incorporate its high school and training school. ``In order to stay competitive,' explained Horiguchi, ``Seirei needs to have advanced IS systems linking all of the facilities that the group owns and operates. We are confident that SGINS, with the help of Cabletron's SmartSwitch Router technology, will serve as a strategic infrastructure base as we work towards making this a reality.'
``Distributed learning will be one of the fastest areas of growth for interactive studies,' commented Nigel Kilpatrick, managing director of International Multimedia Corporation Limited (IMC), a leading independent global provider of multimedia applications, based in London, UK. ``Colleges and institutions of higher education are increasingly looking to provide on-line teaching environments for their campus-based students and to extend their courses and materials to off-campus students, effectively streamlining their business practices and generating incremental revenue. SGEO is a good example of how we see users implementing and utilizing multimedia applications,' added Kilpatrick.
