HDR in Asia.... nikkeibp.asiabiztech.com Qualcomm Unveils High-Data-Rate Wireless Internet System November 15, 1999 (TOKYO) -- Qualcomm Inc. of the United States unveiled Nov. 9 a proprietary system to experiment with a high-speed wireless Internet connection technology. The high-data-rate (HDR) system is a high-speed wireless technology based on code division multiple access (CDMA), which is used for some cellular phones. Qualcomm aims to utilize the new technology for an Internet connection application. Also, the U.S. company is developing HDR-compatible microchips and simulation software to simulate business cases for telecom carriers that are considering moves to introduce HDR services. Users of the simulation software will need to determine conditions such as the population that an HDR infrastructure can actually handle in three years. It will then classify target markets for HDR services into three categories: (1) Internet connections using a notebook personal computer, (2) Internet connections using a personal digital assistant (other than notebook PCs), and (3) Internet connections using a fixed environment such as desktop PCs. The software will then calculate the breakeven point using an estimated annual HDR utilization factor for each of the three target markets. Telecom carriers in various countries have already started examining commercialization of HDR services using the simulation software, according to Hebert Vanhove, Qualcomm's senior manager of business development. "Asian countries, which do not have equivalent services to high-speed Internet connections such as asymmetric digital subscriber lines and cable modems, have especially high expectations of the software," Vanhove said.
