After more than a year of user trials with customers, Globalstar will
officially begin progressive service introduction of its worldwide satellite telephone service today, a company executive said Friday.

Testing took place with nine operational gateways that will cover 30 countries, Mark Newman, general manager of Washington operations for Globalstar Limited Partnership, told the Washington Space Business Roundtable. Six more gateways are in testing, and Globalstar hopes to have 28 ready by the middle of next year. But each gateway must meet company criteria before the launch of official service, Newman said. For example, a gateway cannot begin operation if customers do not have system phones available in their area, he said. Globalstar has 44 satellites in orbit, with four more preparing to launch on a Russian Soyuz rocket and another four completing final testing. The company hopes to have 52 satellites in orbit by the end of the year, with eight more procured as ground spares.<(Aerospace Daily)
