Photoluminescence "inside the element" from Sumitomo

sei.co.jp

From the Annual Report for the year 1999, Research and Development section:

"White" LED Developed

SEI has succeeded in the development of a "White" light-emitting diode (LED). The white light is obtained by mixing an LED's blue light with red-to-yellow light generated by photoluminescence within the LED element. A layer is formed inside the element that is excited by the light given off by the blue LED. This results in the emission of red-to-yellow light through photoluminescence, a phenomenon in which a substance gives off long-wavelength light as a consequence of being excited by external light. This mixing causes the emitted light to be white.

As the manufacturing processes for this LED are identical to those of blue LEDs, drastic improvements in cost and reliability are expected in comparison to conventional white LEDs.

I don't know whether or not this approach is unique to Sumitomo.
