It's my understanding that previous white light from LEDs solely came from the phosphor similar to fluorescent lights. In this Sumitomo version the phosphor only emits part of the white light spectrum with the other part being supplied by the LED itself. If this is true then I would suppose that the Sumitomo lights are more efficient but I'm not sure why they would have "drastic improvements in cost and reliability"? It seems to me that any phosphor could be incorporated within the "element" (e.g. in the "transparent" potting). Unless by "element" they mean the junction itself.
