More on the iPAQ possibility . . .

According to a news article dated November 11, from the Cox News Service, Compaq intends to ship a lot of ePAQs:

'It will make up 10-15 percent of our volume next year,' predicted Mike Winkler, senior vice president of Compaq's commercial PC group.

"That operation accounts for nearly one-third of Compaq's business but suffered a 12 percent drop in sales in the third quarter and lost $169 million. Intended to directly challenge inroads by Dell into that business, the iPaq will be built-to-order whether customers buy it through one of Compaq's traditional resellers or over the Internet from the Houston-based company.

"'We ship direct to the customer under any circumstances,' Winkler said."

================

How many sales are they shooting for? Total sales of about 15M divided by 3 = corporate sales of 5M, times 10-15% = at least 500K units a year. The nicest thing is that the sales channel shortens from five segments down to one, since CPQ wants to make these direct sales. It isn't too much to hope for 1M units a year shipped through CPQ in calendar 2000. That would be enough to make a major difference to IDX's financials.
