John,

The LamdaRouter and the NX-64000 are very different products.
The LamdaRouter is more like a cross-connect in that any of 256 input wavelengths can be switched to any of 256 output wavelengths. The real advance is that all of this occurs in the optical domain, saving an o-e-o conversion. The real value of this device will be most evident when metro DWDM becomes cost effective for delivering individual wavelengths to specific customers. It is most analogous to the Monterrey product in Cisco terms.

The NX-64000 is a Layer3 router - it looks at individual IP packets, does a table look up and sends it on. Apparently it does so at OC-192 line speeds and a fixed latency of 40 microseconds. It is available this quarter, and has been sold to both PSINet and GlobalCrossing. I believe AT&T and Qwest are the other two early testers, with dozens taking the box now for testing. It is by no means made obsolete by the LamdaRouter, in fact, it is a highly complementary product.

Of course, either or both of these products could fail to deliver against their promise. However, the NX-64000 has been tested on live internet traffic by carriers that are viewed to be technically strong.

BTW according to Dell'oro, the GRF peaked at about 2% share in Q397.
