Tony, <Who's AMD got for alliance partners in 64 bit so far? Zero, zilch, nada and I expect it to remain that way, as enterprise computing is quite serious business, not expected to be trusted to a company that loses money in almost every quarter in the last several years.>
I'm amazed at the number of people out there, including the third-party web sites, who think that AMD's 64-bit fantasies are going to amount to anything significant. The only thing AMD does is spread FUD about how IA-64 is too harsh a transition and that AMD's x86-64 extensions are the right way to go. But without software, OS, and OEM support, AMD is stuck in wishful thinking.
Not only that, but AMD has yet to prove that their x86-64 extensions will provide any significant performance advantages over IA-32. They're line of reasoning is "Hey, we've caught up to the RISC guys by enhancing on x86, so we can definitely catch up to IA-64 by continually enhancing x86." That's nothing but more wishful thinking.
In enterprise servers, AMD could do pretty well pushing their Athlon derivatives as well as their upcoming 4-way and 8-way systems (co-developed w/ HotRail). But the x86-64 vapor is just an initial attempt to take the wind out of the IA-64 sails.
