I think you're missing two main points. 1) G.Lite uses less power & 2) G.Lite is a less costly chipset to build. Then we can go to space and other things. G.Lite is for the CPE market and the SOHO.

Word has it, TI recently got their hand slapped by the FCC for false advertising the VDSL power consumption of their chip. So I'm not so sure I'd be so sure they're not being biased.

You may recall this, which is worth reading for anyone interested in DSL.

G.lite service would give me a huge gain. No way can I say it would give me a 4.5 Mbit loss...can't loose what I never had. Full Rate will be nice, however it's not going to push out G.lite in the beginning.
