Corel(r) LINUX(r) OS Lands On The Desktop Today: Corel on top as the Linux(r) desktop leader with launch of Corel(r) LINUX(r) OS and demonstration of full range of applications at Comdex

OTTAWA, ONTARIO--Corel Corporation (NASDAQ: CORL, TSE: COR) is pleased to announce that the much-anticipated Corel(r) LINUX(r) OSis now available as a not-for-charge download. Corel is launching the Corel LINUX OS today, at Fall Comdex in Las Vegas.

There are three versions of Corel LINUX OS: The no-charge downloadversion, available today from Corel's Web site at www.corel.com; the Standard version, which will sell for a suggested
retail priceof US $59.95(1); and the Deluxe version, which will sell for a suggested retail price of US $89.95(1). The Standard and Deluxe English versions will start shipping in North America only on November 30, 1999.(2) Computer users who would like the not-for-charge version on a CD can purchase the CD for US $4.95 (plus shipping and handling) from Corel customer service at 1-800-772-6735.

"Corel LINUX OS is a major leap forward in creating a large desktop market for Linux, and we are very pleased to be launching this landmark version of the most user-friendly Linux OS distribution to date," said Dr. Michael Cowpland, president and chief executive officer of Corel Corporation. "With our demonstration today of our work on a wide-range of mainstream productivity and graphics applications for Linux, there can be no doubt that Corel is a clear Linux desktop leader."

Corel is also currently developing Linux versions of the entire suites of its flagship products, WordPerfect(r) and CorelDRAW(r). The office suite for Linux is expected to be available in the second quarter of 2000 and Corel is also developing the CorelDRAW graphics suite for Linux. As part of its commitment to deliver a complete Linux solution, Corel will also demonstrate a range of its productivity and graphics applications currently under development for Linux at Fall Comdex.

International Data Corporation (IDC) has projected that the entire Linux operating environment market (client and server) will grow at over 25% Compound Annual Growth Rate (CAGR) through 2003. IDC'sLinux forecast notes that all other Client Operating Environments (COE) combined are projected to grow at 10% CAGR during the same forecast period. "The momentum for Linux has been building in the last few years, and we fully expected some vendor to take up the challenge of Linux as a complete desktop solution. The time is now and that vendor is Corel," said Dan Kusnetzky, IDC program director, operating environments and serverware. "IDC believes that Corel LINUX OS will be an attractive option for IT organizations supporting task oriented workers or knowledge workers. IDC recognizes this effort by Corel as a first step in a multi-step process leading to a viable general purpose Linux desktop market."

Corel LINUX OS Download version includes the Corel LINUX OS (basedon Debian, www.debian.org, with the 2.2 Linux kernel); Enhanced KDE Desktop (www.kde.org) built on Qt (www.troll.no); Corel(r) Install Express; Corel(r) Update (formerly called Corel Package Manager); and Corel(r) File Manager.

Corel LINUX OS Standard version includes three CDs. The main install CD includes everything in the Download version, plus Netscape(r) Communicator; Adobe(r) Acrobat(r) Reader; Instant Messenger - ICQ compatible client; 20 Bitstream(r) and Type 1 fonts; and Corel WordPerfect 8 for Linux (light version). The second CD is the open circulation CD, which contains those components from the main install CD that can be freely copied without the need to purchase additional licenses. The final CD is the open circulation source code CD. The Standard version also includes Corel LINUX OS User Guide and 30-day installation support(via email).
