All,

I had a conversation with one of the regional bells on the status of their ADSL trials (I leave as an exercise to the reader to decide which one...it won't be hard). Anyway at this point the Bell is using only CAP during the trial, though they are testing DMT and CAP products at their R&D labs. Setting up the service is going very well and they are having very little technical problems and generally no line conditioning was needed, the service being provided is at 1.5Mbps/64Kbps (down/up). As you might suspect, customers are exceptionally happy.

Of particular interest was that CAP at 1.5Mbps dies out at about 3 miles! So now there is the proverbial real-world trial of CAP and it dies at beyond 3 miles...So now for the question....anyone have any contact or info that can address the real-world trials with DMT, in particular I'm thinking of GTE outside of Dallas or Redmond. Or as they say inside the beltway. Anyone from the great state of Texas or the great state of Washington have any input. My recollection was that DMT could provide 1.5Mbps at closer to 5 miles, but I'm not sure and can't remember just yet where I saw those numbers.

Why is this critical you ask? Because, d--- it, I live 4 miles from my CO (inject laughter here). And if DMT provides a 5 mile radius for service, that's a whole lot more customers that the Bells can get....

Best regards,
Jim
